Life Cycles questions for the APM PMQ

Linear, iterative and hybrid life cycles, phases and the extended life cycle.

Available on iOS and Android

Life-cycle questions are usually a choice between approaches: given a project's characteristics, which life cycle fits, and why? You need to be fluent in linear (waterfall), iterative and incremental, and hybrid delivery, and to know where benefits realisation sits relative to the project itself.

What life cycles covers in the PMQ

  • Linear, iterative, incremental and hybrid life cycles and when each suits
  • The phases of a linear life cycle: concept, definition, deployment, transition
  • The extended life cycle and where benefits realisation falls
  • Why an iterative approach suits uncertain or evolving requirements
  • Decision gates within and between phases
  • The product life cycle versus the project life cycle

Where candidates lose marks

Confusing the project life cycle with the extended (benefits) life cycle. The project ends before most benefits land.

Assuming iterative means 'no planning'. It plans in shorter horizons, not less.

Treating hybrid as a fudge. It is a deliberate mix chosen for the work in hand.

Life cycles questions, answered

What is the difference between the project life cycle and the extended life cycle?

The project life cycle ends when the outputs are handed over; the extended life cycle continues into operations and benefits realisation — which is where most of the value actually lands, after the project itself has closed.

When is an iterative life cycle more suitable than a linear one?

When requirements are uncertain or likely to evolve. An iterative approach plans in short cycles and adapts; a linear (waterfall) life cycle suits stable, well-understood requirements delivered in sequence.
