Most free NEBDN practice questions online are a handful of untimed items with no indication of where they sit in the syllabus. That tells you very little. The NEBDN Knowledge Test is 65 questions in 90 minutes, sat online through MaxExam, and it has to be passed before you reach the final assessment — so the useful practice is a full paper at the right length, at the right pace, across the whole syllabus.
That's what these are. Two complete mocks with no overlap, a clock that submits automatically when it runs out, radiographs and clinical images where the real exam would show them, and a per-topic breakdown at the end so you find out which areas are actually costing you marks.

Sit the first cold, before you revise anything. A first score taken honestly is far more useful than a good score after cramming the topics you already knew — it tells you where the real gaps are. Revise your two weakest topics, then sit the second.
One caution about scores: NEBDN does not publish a pass mark for the Knowledge Test. We mark against a 70% practice threshold because it's a sensible target to be clearing consistently, but it is not the official line and nobody outside NEBDN knows what that is.

NEBDN questions, answered
It is the qualification most UK dental nurses take to register with the General Dental Council. It is awarded by the National Examining Board for Dental Nurses and covers 10 units including Clinical Practice, Communication, Responding to Medical Emergencies, Teamwork and Professional Development. It is aligned to the GDC's Safe Practitioner Framework for Dental Nurses.
There are three components: an internally assessed electronic Portfolio of Evidence built in your dental setting, an externally set and marked online Knowledge Test made up of multiple-choice questions, and an online Professional Discussion with an NEBDN examiner.
The Knowledge Test is 65 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes, sat online through the MaxExam platform. It must be passed before you attempt the final assessment.
Yes. NEBDN requires learners to be working with an NEBDN-approved training provider, and the Portfolio of Evidence has to be built from real experience in a dental setting, so you need a placement or job alongside the course.
There are two separate costs. NEBDN charges an exam and registration fee — £525 at the time of writing — and your training provider charges tuition on top, typically around £1,400, with some all-inclusive packages near £1,735. Resit and late-deferral fees are charged separately; NEBDN's late-deferral fee is £150 if you defer within four weeks of the Knowledge Test. Always check current fees with NEBDN and your provider.
NEBDN does not publish a pass mark for the Knowledge Test. Treat any figure you see quoted online with caution. A sensible working target is to be scoring comfortably above 70% in practice before you sit it, but that is a preparation benchmark rather than an official threshold.
Yes. Providers generally continue to support learners who do not pass at no extra tuition cost, but NEBDN charges a separate resit examination fee. Check the current fee and the resit windows with NEBDN directly.
You can apply to register with the General Dental Council as a Dental Nurse. From there, routes include Practice Manager, Lead Dental Nurse, and NEBDN post-registration qualifications in areas such as radiography, oral health education, sedation and orthodontic nursing.
