Before you book
It is the EUSR (Energy & Utility Skills Register) National Water Hygiene card. UK water companies require it before you carry out 'Restricted Operations' — accessing treated water sites or working on the clean, drinking-water network. You get it by passing a short EUSR-approved course and assessment.
It is a 25-question multiple-choice test, usually 30 minutes, with an instant result and a free retake if you don't pass first time. It covers personal hygiene and health, contamination and its prevention, hygienic working, disinfection of mains and the law.
EUSR registration lasts three years. After that you re-take the training and assessment to renew.
No. The course is open to anyone aged 16 or over with valid ID, and assumes no prior knowledge.
No — they are original questions written to the same standard as the EUSR National Water Hygiene scheme so you can revise the material and get used to the format. The real assessment is sat with an approved provider.
Work on the clean (drinking) water network where contamination could reach the public supply — for example water treatment works, service reservoirs, pumping stations, wells, springs, boreholes, and the network of water mains and service pipes. Anyone doing this work, whether or not they touch the water, needs the card.
Prices vary by provider. A fully online course including the assessment and EUSR registration is commonly around £180. Classroom courses can cost more once you add venue and trainer time.
It's a short course — roughly half a day in a classroom, or about three hours online at your own pace. The assessment is 25 multiple-choice questions in about 30 minutes.
EUSR now issues the National Water Hygiene registration as a digital card through the Vircarda app on your phone, so it can't be lost or forgotten. Some providers offer an optional plastic card as an add-on.
No. The CSCS card covers general construction health and safety (via the CITB HS&E test). The EUSR National Water Hygiene Blue Card is specifically for working safely on the clean water network. Some people working on water infrastructure need both.
