Anything that touches drinking water can affect its quality, so only approved materials may be used. The assessment checks you know why, and what can go wrong with the wrong product.
What materials and approved products covers in the assessment
- Only use materials and fittings approved for drinking water — WRAS-approved / compliant with the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999
- Regulation 4 forbids any material or fitting that could contaminate the water or is otherwise unsuitable
- Use only approved jointing compounds, lubricants and sealants
- The wrong grease, oil or jointing paste can taint the water with a taste or smell, or feed bacteria
- Non-approved plastics and materials can leach chemicals into the water
- If you are unsure whether a product is approved, check before you use it
Where people slip up
Grabbing any grease or lubricant to hand. Only approved products may touch drinking water.
Assuming a fitting is fine because it fits. It must be approved for potable water.
'Making do' with a non-approved part. It can contaminate the supply and is not allowed.
