Fire on a construction site spreads fast and the test checks that you can prevent it, raise the alarm, and get out safely. It also expects you to match the right extinguisher to the right type of fire.

What fire and emergency covers in the HS&E test

  • The fire triangle — heat, fuel, oxygen — and removing one to prevent fire
  • Hot works, permits and a fire watch afterwards
  • Housekeeping and controlling flammable materials and waste
  • Extinguisher types: water, foam, CO2, dry powder, and what each is for
  • Raising the alarm, assembly points and never using a lift
  • Not tackling a fire that is beyond a first attempt — get out and call for help

Where people lose marks

Using a water extinguisher on an electrical or liquid fire. CO2 or dry powder is used on those.

Tackling a large fire rather than raising the alarm and evacuating.

Leaving flammable waste to build up near hot works.
